Happy World Book and Copyright Day 2010!

World Book and Copyright Day 2010

I love this year’s poster with it’s pastel earth tones, trees, roots, water, playing, working, teaching, writing, and reading. It communicates the idea that books connect to our real lives, that they are fertile, that they feed and water our work, our play, and our society. The poster was designed by six publishing students at the Asfored school in Paris. Here is what they have to say about it:

"The characters do things of everyday life on a ‘book planet’ to represent the contribution of the book in everyday life. The tree provides an environmental dimension but it is also intrinsic to the paper medium. The dominant color orange infuses a touch of cheerfulness and optimism," says Damien.

For, as Laurie recalls, "the book is necessary for all sorts of activities, lifestyles, people. Always useful, a source of knowledge, entertainment, evolution, communication. In other words, reading is an integral part of our lives." [Translation by Google]

I think they did an excellent job of representing the diversity inherent in books, paying respect to the trees they are printed on, and saluting the author, which is important since this is also a day to remember the importance of respecting copyright. For all that goes into them and all we get out of them, hurrah for books!
