This is a delightful place in which to read in peace, secure from interruption. The walls are lined from floor to ceiling with old books. The cove which runs around the room is painted with heads of classical writers and philosophers. In addition to being very decorative, these serve as a reference system. 'Cicero 2 XII', for instance, give the book stack, shelf number, and position of the book on the shelf. The books were all catalogued on this system in a great leather-bound volume when the library was installed. The system still works today for the books are all in their original positions.
