This delightful work of bookish statuary can be seen at the Bowling Green Public Library in Kentucky. It was commissioned to complete their new landscaping and to honour past library board chair, Ferris Van Meter.
The end result was a beautiful bronze chair, one that is both meaningful and whimsical. Different sections of the chair reference elements of classic children’s stories. Rockers are graced by The Little Engine That Could, L. Frank Baum’s Yellow Brick Road slopes along the armrest, and the pit from Roald Dahl’s James and the Giant Peach forms the back. With the thematic threads of journey, growth, giving and learning, literary allusions abound. A true gem, this beautiful statue will engage readers, old and young alike, for many years to come.
It's nice to see a library so well-supported that they can commission original art. Nicely done, Bowling Green!
Thanks, Alisa!
