Bruce Manning Metzger, committee chair for the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible, has died at age 93. The NRSV was commissioned by an ecumenical assembly of 35 denominations and is widely regarded as the most accurate English translation of the Bible to date. (I myself have six copies of it plus an NRSV lectionary!) One of the NRSV's fine qualities is that it compensates for the English language's lack of a neuter gender by using inclusive language in passages referring to humans in general. That this has displeased some (including the Vatican) shows just how petty sexism is. Thanks for sticking up for us humans, Bruce.
