Contrary to popular belief, the Holy Grail is not the cup Jesus drank from at the Last Supper, Mary Magdalene's uterus, or the treasure of Castle Aaaaarrrrrrggghhh. No, the cup that draws all nations to itself is, of course, the FIFA World Cup.
In less than a week, hundreds of young men in peak physical condition (ahem) from every corner of the planet will meet in Germany to do battle for the chance to possess soccer's holy grail for the next four years. Their daring exploits will be watched, religiously, by about a quarter of the world's population. Those of you who cohabitate with soccer fans might want to get some quality time in this weekend because it might be the last time you get any undivided attention until July 10th.
As I did for the last few men's and women's World Cup tournaments, I plan to watch every game. That's six blissful hours of soccer a day for two solid weeks, followed by the elimination matches, and the final on July 9th. Obviously this is going to cut into my reading time, but I have my priorities.
Six sleeps to go...
