General Grandpa

Theodore H. Barrett Today I got my copy of The Last Battle of the Civil War: Palmetto Ranch by Jeffrey Hunt. My interest in this book is purely genealogical—my great-great-grandfather, General Theodore H. Barrett, led the Union forces in that battle. I flipped through the book to find a picture of General Grandpa and recognized him instantly since his portrait used to hang in my grandmother's house. He seems to have had sad, clear, soulful eyes, and I see that I have him to thank for my unexceptional jawline.

Georgiana Barrett Through the book's picture credit I tracked down photos of him online at the Minnesota Historical Society. They also have one photograph of his lovely wife, Georgiana. I know absolutely nothing about her except that she was 20 years his junior. Her husband was a very prosperous farmer after the war so I like to think she was spared the dawn-to-dusk drudgery of the typical farmer's wife.

Rest in peace, grandma & grandpa.
